About
A clear, honest guide in a fast-moving market.
Plug-in solar could finally bring solar to renters and apartment dwellers — but the rules, safety standards, and product claims are changing so fast that most advice online is either out of date or trying to sell you something. We built this site to be the exception.

What we promise you
Every claim on this site is backed by a source you can click, and we say plainly when something isn’t settled. We spell out acronyms, skip the jargon, and explain the trade-offs — including the ones a product page would rather you didn’t think about.
We’re deliberately careful with the state tracker. We keep signed laws separate from proposed bills, note when a law hasn’t taken effect yet, and flag states where the public record simply isn’t clear. A kit can be exciting and still need you to check your state’s rules, the certification, your outlet, and a safe place to mount it.
What this site isn’t
It’s a well-researched starting point — not legal advice, electrical advice, or a substitute for a qualified electrician and your own homework. We don’t sell kits, and we’re not paid to recommend one over another.
Where to start
New here? Read what plug-in solar is, check your state, run the savings calculator, and then work through the buyer’s guide before you compare any products.
